Build a Garden That Feeds Itself Using Kitchen Scraps 🌱 A Simple Keyhole Garden Guide
Building a keyhole garden isn’t just gardening — it’s creating a self-feeding ecosystem right in your backyard 🌱

Here’s how to actually build one step by step:
1. Mark your space
Start by drawing a circle about 3–4 feet radius using a string tied to a center stake. This will be your garden shape.
2. Build the compost basket (the heart of it)
In the center, create a wire mesh basket about 1.5 ft wide and up to 4 ft tall. This is where all your kitchen scraps will go.
3. Create the outer wall
Use bricks, stones, or wood to build a circular wall around the edge — about 1 meter high. Leave space for access.
4. Add the “keyhole” opening
Create a wedge-shaped path from the outside to the center basket so you can easily reach it.
5. Layer from the ground up
- Bottom: gravel or stones (drainage)
- Middle: alternating browns (cardboard, straw) + greens (scraps, grass)
- Top: rich soil for planting Slightly slope everything from the center outward.

6. Start planting
Fill the bed with vegetables, herbs, or flowers — this design supports diversity.
7. Feed your garden continuously
Add food scraps regularly into the center basket and water through it — this spreads nutrients naturally.
8. Make it easy to use
Add small paths or stepping areas so you can comfortably access all parts of the bed.
9. Keep it healthy long-term
Rotate crops and adjust based on your climate — your garden will only get better each season.

🌿 Why it works:
– Uses waste as fertilizer
– Saves water
– Builds richer soil over time
– Grows more in less space
What used to go in your trash… now grows your food 🌍
