8 Fruit trees that you can plant with the fruit’s own seed
For a person to have a balanced and healthy diet, they must include a little of each of the different types of food daily.
In the case of fruits, specialists suggest that the average adult should consume about one and a half to two cups each day on a regular basis.
There is a practical solution that can help you without too much inconvenience, since you can grow your own fruits in the comfort of your home.
Next, we show you some fruit trees that you can plant with the fruit’s own seed in an easy and effective way.
1- Peach
To stratify peach pits, wrap pits in damp paper towel and place in refrigerator for 8 weeks. After that, you can plant them.
To facilitate the stratification process, remove the seeds from the holes and place each one in a plastic bag, as many of them may not survive the first year.
The soil must be deep, sandy and have a fringe of clayey limestone. Be aware that poor soil drainage can kill the root system of the peach tree.
Keep the soil moist, but not wet because it will rot. Trees also need a lot of sunlight.
The tree can take between 3 and 5 years to bear fruit.
2- Cherry
To bear fruit it needs to go through a period of stratification. To do this, place the dried seeds in an airtight plastic container and store in the refrigerator for 10 weeks. When the sprouts are ready, plant them taking into account the following recommendations:
Cherry trees need a lot of sunlight and good air circulation, this type of plant needs a fertile, sandy soil with excellent drainage.
Keep the soil slightly moist.
You will have to wait 7-10 years to taste their homegrown fruits.
3- Plum
To grow a plum tree you need some preparations. First, place a plum seed on the windowsill for several days to dry out. Then, use a nutcracker to get the seed inside. After that, take a glass of water and put the seeds inside, leaving them there overnight. Next, take a mason jar filled with compost or fertilizer, place the seeds inside, and seal the jar. Put the container in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks until roots appear.
Plant the buds in potting mix that contains 2 parts soil and 1 part compost.
Plum trees need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
During the germination period keep the soil slightly moist, but not too moist.
The plum tree begins to bear fruit in 3-5 years.
4- Apple tree
If you want to grow a tree from apple seeds remember that the type of apple tree you grow may not be the same as the seed you planted. Also, don’t forget that the tree will grow to its full height, unless you choose a dwarf tree type. Here are some tips to increase your chances of success:
Take 2 different types of seeds if you want your tree to bear fruit. Place them in an airtight plastic bag on a damp paper towel. Then store the bag in the refrigerator for 70 to 80 days.
Plant the shoots in the first week of spring.
Place the container with the seeds on the windowsill so they have plenty of access to sunlight.
As long as the apple tree is small, it should be watered every 10-12 days. As it grows you can start watering it less often.
Trees planted from seed can take 8 to 10 years to bear fruit.
5- Pear
To facilitate the germination process, it is best to stratify the seeds first. Place the seeds in a plastic bag filled with moist peat moss. Store in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. After that, place the seeds in a glass of water for 2 days. You can plant them following these recommendations:
Pear trees need well-draining soil and at least 6 hours of sunlight. Remember that the more light a plant receives, the more water it needs.
Water the plant at least once a week, it is better to do it in the morning or in the afternoon.
The tree can take at least 3 years and a maximum of 10 to start bearing fruit.
6- Avocado
Before planting an avocado seed you must prepare a sprout and then plant it. Take 3 or 4 toothpicks and use them to hold the seed suspended in a glass of water (point down). The liquid should cover approximately 2.5 cm of it. Place the cup in a warm spot out of direct sunlight for 2-6 weeks until roots appear.
When planting the sprout make sure that the seed is partially exposed to the air.
It is best to plant from March to June.
Avocado trees do best in moderately humid conditions and should be watered 2-3 times a week.
It can take 5 to 13 years for the tree to mature enough to start producing fruit. Don’t worry about too many flowers falling off, it’s a natural process.
7- Lemon tree
You can easily grow lemons from the fruit’s seeds by following these simple rules:
Plant at least 5-10 seeds at a time, in case some don’t germinate. It is best to choose larger seeds from a fresh lemon.
Don’t forget that lemon trees love water, so keep the soil moist by watering it 2-3 times a week.
Seedlings need 10 to 14 hours of sunlight, while mature trees need at least 8 hours.
If you can see the roots through the drainage holes in the pot it is time to plant the tree in a larger container.
The tree can take around 5 years to bear fruit, and in some cases you will have to wait up to 15 years.
8- Tangerine
Mandarin oranges can reach 3 to 4 m in height. If you want to grow it you should take into account the following tips:
Place the tree in a well-lit spot, but not in direct sunlight. Use soil and water to drain well, but not too much.
It is best to use fresh fruit seeds as they are more viable and it is suggested to plant them in spring or early summer.
When the seedlings are large enough divide them into a larger container with potting soil mix.
Mandarin oranges grown from seed can take 4 to 7 years to flower and produce fruit.
