How to clean blinds: step-by-step for each type
Regardless of the material and type of structure you choose for your blinds, they need frequent maintenance and, as correct as possible, or they can become dented and deformed.
1- How to clean horizontal blinds
The most common horizontal blinds produced in aluminium, PVC or wood must be cleaned basically with a mixture of water and neutral detergent. The first step is to remove the dust with a mop, vacuum cleaner, cloth dampened only with water or a window blind cleaner.
If you are going to use a vacuum cleaner, use the nozzle with a brush to avoid damaging or scratching the blinds. The blind cleaner is a very useful item, it consists of three plastic rods covered with a microfiber fabric. The rods fit between the blind blades, cleaning several at the same time.
After dusting, clean each blade with a soft sponge soaked in water and mild detergent and dry thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines to make sure the material is water resistant.
Wooden blinds can be coated with furniture polish at the end of the cleaning process to waterproof and shine the slats.
2- How to clean double vision blinds
This blind cannot be washed with water or in the washing machine or the product will be badly damaged. The ideal is to clean with steam, vacuum cleaner, dusters and a cloth slightly dampened only with water.
3- How to clean vertical blinds
Remove all blades from the rail and clean each blade with a damp cloth soaked in water only to remove dust. If you prefer, vacuum them with them still attached to the rails using the brush nozzle. Then remove the blades and soak them in a mixture of soap and water and rub each one individually. Dry well with a dry cloth and hang back on the rails to dry.
4- How to clean Roman and roller blinds
These blinds should not only be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, as they are very delicate and home washing can damage the fabric or material of the panels. If necessary, consult a specialized cleaning company.
In general, the ideal is to clean the blinds once a week to at least dust off the blades. A deeper cleaning is indicated every fifteen days. You can use all-purpose cleaner on plastic or PVC blinds, just be careful that the colors don’t fade if the product is too strong.
Keeping them always free of dust is important for the health of the residents of the house, as allergy sufferers suffer a lot from the accumulation of waste and mites and also helps with maintenance, as heavy cleaning will be easier.
Take good care of your blinds, as they beautify your home and can last for many, many years if kept clean properly. Another important piece of information is to be careful with small children who may get tangled up in the wires that collect the blinds’ slats. With children, be careful!
