Make your own wooden storage drawers with sliders!
In this article, we will show you how to make sliding wooden drawer storage. It’s a perfect addition to any small or narrow closet to gain extra space. And you don’t need a lot of tools to do it!
Step 1: Gather Your Materials and Tools
Tools:
miter saw
Random Orbital Sander
Drill
Level
Measuring tape
Materials/Supplies:
3 x 18″ Drawer Slides
4 large wooden drawers
1 medium wooden box
2 small wooden drawers
2 8′ 1×4 pine battens
chalkboard stickers
1-5/8 wood screws
wall anchors
Step 2: Strengthen the boxes
I started by strengthening the boxes by ripping the slats off the bottom and then putting glue on them to give them more strength. I put an extra nail in each slat to help it set and dry.
I then cut 2 18″ pieces of 1×4 for each box. I screwed them to the top and bottom of the right sides of the box with 1-5/8″ screws.
Step 3: Paint the drawers (optional)
I painted the boxes to give a little color to the space where this piece of furniture will go.
Step 4: Install the mounting clips
I cut 2 39-1/2″ cleats from a 1×4 and mounted them on the cabinet.
I first mounted the rear one right into the corner with 2-1/2″ screws. The front of the box was 18-1/2″ from the back wall (to the front) and I attached it with wall anchors.
Step 5: Assemble the sliders
I cut out a space that was 6″x18-1/2″ and used it to mark the location of the runners on the boxes. I drew a line at the top of the bottom of the spacer which gave me exactly parallel and spaced mounting lines.
I separated them and installed the extension piece on the boxes using the lines so I could center it.
Step 6: Mount the sliders on the wall
Using the same spacer, I marked the position of the drawer slides on the studs. This means that they will line up exactly with the sliders on the side of the drawer when you install them.
I spaced the second and third set of sliders 6″ below the one above.
Step 7: Install the wooden boxes
With all the sliders assembled I now simply slide the boxes onto the docking slides on the wall.
I uploaded them and installed some labels on them for organization. It worked great and each box can hold at least 20lbs.
