How to clean a dirty mattress: 8 tips

Today we are going to learn how to clean a dirty mattress. As much as you change the sheets every day, the bacteria get through them and end up on the mattress, which allows them to reproduce without problems.

Even being as clean as possible, these bacteria are always present. In a study at a university in the United States, it showed that more than a third of the bacteria found in bed come from our own body, including bacteria from faeces, skin and saliva . Then there are the stains generated by humidity, which can generate very strong respiratory diseases.

In this article we are going to show you some homemade and inexpensive tricks to eliminate various types of stains and bad odors, leaving your mattress as new.

Tricks to clean the mattress

1.- White vinegar
This method is perfect for newer mold stains. On a damp cloth, we sprinkle water, detergent and a lot of vinegar. We rub a little the affected area and let it act for a few hours.

What this mixture does is affect the pH of the mold and eliminate all the bacteria that are in the stain. And stay calm because it does not leave a vinegar smell, since it evaporates over time.

2.- Sodium Bicarbonate: How to clean a mattress with pee?

To remove urine stains from a mattress, we simply apply baking soda on the stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

After time, we rub the stain with a sponge with soapy water in proportionate amounts. To finish, we clean with a damp cloth and let it dry.

3.- Hydrogen Peroxide (Oxygenated Water)

To remove the oldest mold stains, we would need 30 ml of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tbsp of baking soda. Mix well and apply this mixture with a toothbrush that we do not use.

Now we just brush the stain until the mixture becomes foamy. To finish, we remove the excess with a slightly moistened cloth.

4.- Detergent

Blood stains can be a bit of a hassle to clean, but it just takes 1 product and patience. We put a little detergent on a damp cloth and apply it on the stain (without rubbing).

After about 15 minutes, we clean the excess detergent with a completely dry cloth. It may be that the first time it does not come out completely, but just by repeating this procedure one more time, the stain is completely gone.

5.- Homemade mix

This option is a bit difficult to prepare, but it helps remove various types of stains and removes bacteria completely.

We will need:

1 cup of ethyl alcohol
3 glasses of white vinegar
1 tbsp baking soda
3 tbsp fabric softener
Hand wipes (quantity required)
Procedure
We combine all the ingredients (except the wipes) in a large container.
Slowly soak a washcloth and rub the entire mattress well (in areas with more stains, rub with more force).
Once the mixture is finished, leave the mattress in the sun or somewhere that is well ventilated.

6.- Lemon

Removing wine stains is a nuisance, but with this mixture it will be very simple. Just mix 1/2 cup of water with the juice of 1/2 lemon.

We soak a damp cloth in this mixture and rub the stain vigorously. Let it dry for 1 hour in a well-ventilated place.

7.- Alcohol

We all like animals to sleep with us, but sometimes they leave a pretty strong smell on the mattress.

To fix it we would need a sprinkler. In it we are going to put 1/2 glass of ethyl alcohol and 1/2 glass of white vinegar. We spray the entire mattress and let it dry naturally for 30 minutes.

With this we will completely eliminate the bad odors generated by the animals, although it leaves a neutral smell. If you want it to have a pleasant smell, add 1 tablespoon of fabric softener to the mixture and mix well.

8.- Vacuum cleaner
This step is very good against very dirty and somewhat old mattresses. Although we need a vacuum cleaner to remove all the dirt in an effective way.

We will need:

Vaccum cleaner
Baking soda (amount needed)
Soft brush
Procedure
We sprinkle a lot of bicarbonate over the entire mattress (sprinkling a greater quantity on darker spots) and let it act for about 30 minutes.

After time, with a brush we rub well over the entire surface (without applying too much force), and let it rest for another 30 minutes.

Finally, we vacuum the entire mattress with the remains of bicarbonate and the dust generated by the stains. With this procedure, we will obtain a dirt-free mattress that is perfect to use again.
